Situated in Red Reef Park on a barrier island between the Intracoastal and the Atlantic Ocean, the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center has a 40-foot high observation tower and an elevated boardwalk through mangroves and tropical hardwood hammocks. The complex also offers indoor and outdoor classrooms, interpretive displays and exhibits of snakes, baby sea turtles, a beehive, saltwater fish, seashell and sea bean collections, and mounted fish and birds.

Watchable wildlife: Gray squirrels, land crabs, migratory warblers, and other songbirds inhabit the hammock. Brown pelicans, ospreys, ring-billed and laughing gulls, and terns can be seen from the beach across the street.
