Discover Florida's Indian heritage at the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Seminole Museum. In the Seminole language, Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki means "to learn," and this place is true to its name. The museum is dedicated to preserving the history and cultural traditions of the Seminole people.

The preservation of those traditions owes much to an elderly 19th century medicine man. He was known as Abiaca to the Indians (Sam Jones to the rest of Florida). His leadership in the Second Seminole War (1835-1842) ensured an Indian presence in Florida to this day. The Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum stands not far from the spot where Abiaca is believed to be buried.

The Seminole Tribe of Florida opened this museum to preserve and celebrate the history and culture of their Indian nation. This $2-million museum presents exhibits, artifacts and photographs depicting native customs and ceremonies such as the Catfish and Corn Dances. An important part of the museum complex is a living Seminole village. Nature trails and a boardwalk wind back through the cypress swamp.

The Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum is an excellent place to learn about the people who cherished South Florida before Western man arrived.
