As dedicated as most colleges and universities are to expanding students' minds and giving them a fuller understanding of the world around them, the majority of the courses they offer are, let's face it, flat-out freakin' boring. Does anybody really like to study macroeconomics? Seventeenth-century literary theory? Or, horror of horrors, statistics? However, South Florida's institutions of higher learning offer at least a few courses the titles of which alone pique our interest. Some of the following may simply be extra-curricular classes students take to lighten their course loads, but we're tempted to go back to school just to enroll in them. University of Miami DAN1021: Stretching and body work This course has no prerequisite and does not require note-taking. But you will do plenty of stretching. PHI110: Critical thinking Basically, this course is about arguing. ART262: Intro to the wheel The pottery wheel, that is. The class is currently full. Prerequisite: The movie Ghost. Florida Atlantic University WWP107: Women, war and peace-building What could be better than learning about women, war and peace? Florida International University POT4309: Sex, power and politics Guest speakers could include Bill Clinton, Jesse Jackson and Rudolph Giuliani. Nova Southeastern University CRJU3100: Juvenile delinquency Warning: Students will receive no credit for time served in juvenile detention. HUMN1000G: Shelley's Frankenstein Bring your own parts. HUMN4310: The vampire This class is for people who read Anne Rice, watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer and listen to Say Hi To Your Mom's new vampire-themed CD. Dress code: Turtlenecks. Lynn University CRJ405: Terrorism Suicide bombers receive 72 virgins and an automatic A. ENG203: Studies in drama This class has nothing to do with HBO's Entourage. Barry University COM412: Persuasion This class is a prerequisite to COM413: Persistence. Palm Beach Community College SYG2361: Death and dying No, this is not a how-to course. HUS0806: Suicide prevention Prerequisite: Death and dying. HUS0063: Multiple-personality miracle The class is full and includes only one student. |
