Culture Room
3045 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, 954/564-1074, www.cultureroom.net
Despite heavy new competition from Revolution and smaller fish such as Sofa Kings, the Culture Room remains the place to go for an eclectic mix of shows. Because Revolution rightly sticks to large acts that promise to sell more than a thousand tickets, the Culture Room fills an important niche, catering to popular local bands as well as national acts on the rise. Indeed, excellent forethought goes into which bands to book. The Culture Room booked shows by both The Killers and The Bravery just as those bands were beginning to appear on the national radar, so by the time either band actually played its gig, the place was packed, with a hopeless crowd trying to get into the sold-out show. But the diverse bookings at the Culture Room earned it this title. In August alone, the club played host to country act Rambler, reggae artist Yellowman, crazed metal group Mushroomhead and jam band Karl Denson's Tiny Universe.
