Side Pocket isn't the largest pool hall around; likewise, it isn't the nicest and doesn't boast the most tables. But it does have one thing the others don't: free pool and plenty of it. Every weekday until 6 p.m. plus all day on Sunday, you don't have to pay a dime to shoot some balls around. That leaves you plenty of money to blow on beer, which is reasonably priced. Sporting a windowless façade and airplane-through-the-wall mural, the place looks like an unfriendly dive from the outside, but indoors, the hospitality couldn't be better. What with the free pool, the cheap beer and the smiles, the Side Pocket almost makes you feel as if you're conning these people out of their livelihoods. But hey, they make the rules. We just hit their balls with big, heavy sticks.
