Brew Urban Café
209 S.W. Second Ave., Fort Lauderdale, 954/523-7191

We were all set to give this designation to Two Street Coffee Garage. However, the intimate downtown coffee nook closed in May. Fortunately the business, renamed Brew Urban Café, was taken over by a couple of former customers who loved the place as much as we did. Brew retains much of what made Two Street so beloved, from the heady aroma that wafts out to the sidewalk to the relaxed and sunny atmosphere, where you can dig into The New York Times or various other publications put out for your perusal. A Wi-Fi connection allows visitors to do a little work -- or just read e-mails and goof around on the Net. Then, there's the very fine coffee, made with Intelligentsia beans shipped from Chicago and regularly spotlighting different regions of the coffee-growing world. (We're sipping a Kenyan blend as we write this.) Espresso, flavored coffee drinks, cookies, pastries, frappes, bubble teas and service-industry and student discount cards all make Brew a worthy successor to Two Street.
