The photo illustrations of Juddy Lane
www.juddylane.com

Inspired by her grandmother's turn-of-the-century post cards, Juddy Lane creates hauntingly surreal images. Her sepia photographs of models dressed in period garb possess qualities of formal portraits of an earlier era. A young woman leans distractedly on one elbow, her dissatisfaction and ennui almost palpable; a pigtailed and heavily made-up waif turns from the upright piano upon which her hand lightly rests, her expression revealing a mixture of surprise and consternation; a wide-eyed woman with a headscarf, her face covered in white greasepaint, a slash of red lipstick and raccoonlike mascara, stares dramatically into the lens like a silent-movie siren. Unsurprisingly, the Peruvian-born Lane was greatly influenced by old movies, as well as the spiritual and mystical philosophies of her father, a parapsychologist and painter. Also not surprising, Lane's flair for the dramatic netted her a position as art director of Miami's White Orchard Theatre. Visit her Web site and browse her galleries of photographs and paintings, and be sure to check out the slide shows, one of which is accompanied by the singing of Edith Piaf, for a true time-tripping experience.
