Best Barbecue — Palm Beach

September 21 2005

Park Avenue BBQ
969 S.E. Fifth Ave., Delray Beach, 561/279-7427; 2215 Palm Beach Lakes Blvd., West Palm Beach, 561/689-7427; and various other locations

The name Park Avenue is most often associated with New York, but what the hell do New Yorkers know about barbecue? Anyone who would judge Park Avenue BBQ by its name and outward appearance (the place looks like a former diner), though, would be missing out. In the two West Palm locations, the staff is friendly and efficient. Start your meal with a nice bowl of Brunswick stew. The pork and turkey sandwiches are superb, but the ribs are some of the best you'll have, as every bite off each meaty, smoky bone satisfies your barbecue craving. Load up on the barbecue sauce, which packs such a tangy kick that you won't mind making a mess while eating it. Don't forget to indulge your sweet tooth with the corn fritters. They come with a side of honey and powdered sugar, and the taste will remind anyone who has been to New Orleans of Café du Monde's beignets.
