York Castle Tropical Ice Cream
61 S. State Road 7, Plantation, 954/316-9600

Calver Headley began serving his premium tropical and exotic flavors in an anonymous storefront a year ago, just as South Florida was dodging or being hit by four hurricanes. Despite the windblown start and the challenging location, his York Castle shop has built a following through the sheer quality of the goods. Headley's homemade ice creams come in 34 flavors, many of which you won't find anywhere else. Born in Jamaica, he scoops a wide selection of Caribbean flavors, including mango, litchi, coconut and piņa colada. He also makes a killer pistachio and counts among his creations batches of black cherry, guava and strawberry; peanut; cinnamon; and even Guinness (yes, the beer). Headley has worked in ice-cream stores since he went to college at the University of Maryland in 1973, and the years of experience show in these deliciously crafted treats.
