Best Way To See How 1 Percent of the Population Lives
September 21 2005
Palm Beach Bicycle Trail
South of the Inlet Pier of the island of Palm Beach
You can't get any of those massive tax cuts the richest 1 percent of the population gets, but you can see who those people are (from a distance) during a bike ride along the 5-mile Lake Trail in Palm Beach. Just put on that ratty old T-shirt you won at a kill-the-keg party and take a ride that goes along the Intracoastal past the Biltmore Hotel and Palm Beach founder Henry Flagler's Whitehall mansion and Sea Gull Cottage. It was Flagler who originally planned the path in 1894 for his hotel guests. The Lake Trail will take you to the Inlet Pier, where you can continue your ride south on A1A past the Kennedy compound and even more mansions with an ocean view. Bring your own bike or rent one at the Palm Beach Bicycle Trail Shop, which also offers tours for $35 per person (minimum five people). The shop is located at 233 Sunrise Ave.; call 561/659-4583 or visit www.palmbeachbicycle.com.
