Wherever people gather to use their minds and mouths to empower and uplift listeners, you'll likely find Terese "Chunky" Hill. This Palm Beach County deputy sheriff and spoken-word artist makes verbal expression her business. Hill, who ranked fifth in the nation at a national poetry slam in St. Louis last year, works with others to provide a venue for young spoken-word artists to speak freely among their peers. Her youth slams, held the second Friday of every month at Audy's Place Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale, provide a clublike atmosphere for spoken-word artists who are too young to get into clubs. They've been showing up in such large numbers that the event frequently is standing room only. This year, Hill accompanied six South Florida youth slam winners to San Francisco, where they placed second at the Brave New Voices: International Youth Poetry Slam, missing first place by only half a point.
