Morgan Pressel
Amateur may be a silly word to apply to 17-year-old Boca Raton golf phenomenon Morgan Pressel, especially since she nearly won this year's U.S. Women's Open. Only a miraculous bunker shot by Birdie Kim kept Pressel from becoming the youngest winner of the Open in history. Even if she had won, she would not have been able to collect the $560,000 in prize money because of her amateur status, designated by age. But if she were 18 and eligible, she would have pocketed more than $300,000 this year in tournament winnings. Having petitioned the LPGA to waive the age requirement so she can enter qualifying school this fall, Pressel will likely forgo college and turn pro. Even so, watching her struggle and triumph as a local amateur has been a joy. From being Class 1A state champion to giving the likes of Annika Sorenstam and Michelle Wie fits on the LPGA tour to being catapulted into the national spotlight, Pressel has quickly earned her status as one of the game's newest stars.
