Ever wonder who those folks are who wave signs on the corner of Broward Boulevard and Andrews Avenue in Fort Lauderdale from 5 to 7 p.m. every Friday? Holding a weekly vigil, the Broward Anti-war Coalition is a model of persistence. The nonpartisan grassroots organization formed in 2001 in response to the impending U.S. attack on Afghanistan and united, as its mission statement puts it, to "oppose U.S. occupations and wars against Iraq and Afghanistan, and ... stand against all forms of imperialism and militarist aggression. We assertively defend the Bill of Rights and seek to overturn the accelerating restrictions on our civil liberties." In addition to protests, the group presents educational forums and film showings. Meetings take place 7:30 p.m. Thursdays at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center, 1717 N. Andrews Ave., in Fort Lauderdale.
