Outside Mizner Park Amphitheater
590 Plaza Real, Boca Raton, 561/750-1668, Miznerparkamp.com

It was a sight to behold: On the night of March 5, in the middle of staid and swanky Mizner Park, fat-tired pickup trucks lined the street, blasting classic country songs from their windows as their drivers cat-called the trophy wives of the center's well-heeled, well-oiled denizens. The wide median was dotted with lawn chairs that groaned under the weight of round-bottomed rednecks who'd decided that this was as good a place as any to catch a Willie Nelson concert -- never mind that they didn't have a ticket and couldn't see the amphitheater stage from where they were sitting. Appearing to have been built by veteran tailgaters, the amphitheater faces the ritzy shopping and dining center and sports surprisingly good, far-traveling acoustics for an open-air concert venue. During the past few years, the amphitheater has provided a windfall for cheapskates; artists as varied as the Pixies, A Perfect Circle, Brian Wilson and Kelly Clarkson have played here, and their performances could be heard from at least a block south of the venue's front gates.
