Sushi Blues Cafe and Blue Monk Lounge
2009 Harrison St., Hollywood, 954/929-9560, Sushiblues.com

Sushi Blues has become an institution in downtown Hollywood, but there's nothing institutional about Junko Maslak and Kenny Millions' restaurant and juke joint. Millions plays sax and books blues acts every Wednesday through Saturday, but it's Maslak's creative Japanese menu that commands the room at the dinner hour. Open since 1989, first on Young Circle and now on Harrison Street, Sushi Blues has earned the patronage of an adoring public with the raw creations of one-named sushi chefs Yozo and Yoshi and the cooked cuisine of Ruben Long. If you like your food cold, don't miss the lobster roll with avocado. For a hot entrée, the sea bass with shiitake mushrooms, snapper in sweet-and-sour cilantro sauce, grilled lamb chops in jerk sauce and filet mignon in a balsamic-soy reduction stand apart from the teriyaki fare found on most Japanese menus. Not to be outdone by the kitchen, the bar puts an exotic spin on the classic mojito with pineapple and grapefruit varieties.
