Taqueria Doņa Raquel
793 S. Dixie Highway, Pompano Beach, 954/946-4490
Taqueria Doņa Raquel serves actual, authentic Mexican food, as opposed to the brown sludge of refried beans coupled with rice and a margarita made from mix and bad tequila that most so-called Mexican restaurants offer. Plus, Doņa Raquel's food comes cheap, with tamales (mole, rojo, verde or dulce), tostadas (chicken or beef) and tacos (11 kinds, including chorizo, chicken, pork or beef) costing $1.99 each. The restaurant offers the usual complimentary chips-and-salsa appetizer, but the chips here are freshly fried, and the salsa is dark and beefy, not the tomato paste served at many Tex-Mex joints. Carne asada tacos include beef, onions, spices and nothing else, lacking the shredded cheese and sour cream indicative of Americanized Mexican restaurants. The fact that the place has survived and even thrived just half a block down Dixie Highway from Cielito Lindo, a popular purveyor of pseudo-Mexican fare, serves as a testament to Doņa Raquel's quality and staying power.
