And if you believe a restaurant's authenticity can be measured by its patrons, then Madras, with its tables filled with smiling Indian and British customers any night of the week, is a standout. Even takeout is special here, with a warm hostess who insists on guests' resting in the decorated "King's Chair" with a free British newspaper and a chilled glass of mango lassi, a yogurt drink. Tandoori-baked salmon smoked with a honey glaze and vegetarian navratan korma are both well worth a visit.
