Markham Park

No public park in Broward County offers as diverse a range of activities as this 666-acre parcel located in what used to be considered "way out west" by people who live east of State Road 7. Adjacent to Weston, Markham Park welcomes visitors with a tree-lined entrance that leads to picnic shelters surrounding an elongated lake. Markham's perimeter appeals to hobbyists with its remote-control model airplane field, a marina that launches self-propelled watercraft on a 133-acre lake, a rifle and pistol target range, an observatory that hosts weekly stargazing meetings, a dog park and an eight-mile mountain biking trail (see Best Place to Mountain Bike). Like most local parks, Markham lost many trees during the 2005 hurricane season, but it still provides a plus-size oasis from the highways, shopping malls and zero-lot-line developments that exist just past its border.
