Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
Jan. 21, 2006, Intracoastal Waterway and Flagler Drive, West Palm Beach, 561/841-0041, Raceforthecure-sofla.org

Hardly a weekend goes by that a charitable 5K run isn't taking place in South Florida. No 5K, however, raises as much money from as many participants as the Komen Race for the Cure, held every January in West Palm Beach. The 2006 run drew 19,678 men, women and kids, who raised more than $1 million for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Three-fourths of the money stayed in South Florida to provide breast screenings, treatment and education for local women, most of whom are underinsured. The Race for the Cure has raised $5 million since 2000 and will add to that figure at the next run, scheduled to take place Jan. 20.
