A1A Marathon
Feb. 19, 2006, Fort Lauderdale, A1amarathon.com

The first A1A Marathon trumped more-established runs in Miami and West Palm Beach by giving runners a beautiful sunrise over the Atlantic and a view of the ocean for 95 percent of the 26.2-mile course. Considered "the marathon of the future" by locals, the A1A Marathon was pushed back from its original mid-November date to February because of Hurricane Wilma. The move proved fortuitous: The dry, winter weather was perfect for the runners, most of whom were from South Florida, and more tourists lined the trail from Fort Lauderdale to Pompano Beach and back than likely would have in November. More than 300 of the 2,856 runners finished the marathon, but considering how well the event was received, organizers expect the field to grow for the next run Feb. 18.
