Best Used-Book Store

Robert A. Hittel, Bookseller and The Bookshop
3020 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, 954/563-1752, Equa.com

Because of Internet shopping, used-book stores are slowly becoming a thing of the past. The trend nearly killed this shop last year after more than 30 years in this Federal Highway building. Hittel was ready to close his namesake shop and concentrate entirely on selling his rare and collectible books. He's still doing so from the third floor, above what is now called The Bookshop. Nancy Mizel-Berdugo and Kathleen Corcoran couldn't stand the thought of losing Hittel's, so they bought the bottom two floors and opened The Bookshop last November. With our eternal gratitude, they haven't changed a thing. Always an oasis from the noise and hustle of South Florida, the blissfully quiet shop is still inviting to people who are curious about the world and rewards them with more than 100,000 titles that leave almost no epoch or subject unaddressed. A couch, chair and reading lamp await readers on the second floor, and the aisles are cluttered with stacks of books that can't help but grab your attention.
