Great cities are known for the art they exhibit, and for a few days a year, Miami Beach is an ideal place to see art. With roughly 200 galleries filling the floor space at the Miami Beach Convention Center, Art Basel has become a must-do for cultural aesthetes from Europe and the Americas who flock to see works from cutting-edge and museum-quality artists. The annual four-day event is the biggest of its kind in the United States, and the infusion of visitors has provided collateral benefits for local galleries and artists. The nearby Wynwood Art District and other South Florida venues piggyback Art Basel to bring exposure to artists who might otherwise go unnoticed. And unlike a visit to the museums of Florence or Paris, Art Basel is accompanied by an all-night party circuit that's almost as stimulating as the show itself. The fifth Art Basel will take place Dec. 7-10.
