Lake Worth Street-Painting Festival
Lake and Lucerne avenues between Federal and Dixie highways, Lake Worth, 561/582-4401, Streetpaintingfestivalinc.org
Lake Worth holds this annual festival, now entering its 13th year, on the last weekend in February, and it inevitably rains every time. But that's half the fun, since the avenues are lined with patio restaurants where festivalgoers can sit under awnings and watch the street painters scramble to cover their masterpieces with huge sheets of plastic. When the clouds clear, the chalk comes back out, and the artists are likely to put the finishing touches on everything from a replica of "The Last Supper" to a scene from The Family Guy. In keeping with the event's carnivallike atmosphere, visitors are encouraged to grab a bucket of chalk and let loose in a designated area. Street painting dates back to 16th-century Italy, but the Lake Worth festival has improved the tradition by providing an opportunity to eat corn dogs and elephant ears while checking out the art.
