Danny Hammontree

Boca Raton firefighter Hammontree may not be a professional photographer, but he has a talent for capturing the personalities of protesters and others who exercise their right of civil disobedience. His most memorable subjects include a happy Krishna; a guitar-playing bluesman sitting on an upside-down bucket; an old woman in military boots carrying a sign that reads, "No more body bags"; and Bible thumpers yelling at hip-hop fans in Miami Beach. Hammontree's subjects, who are often shot in intense close-up, aren't always willing to be photographed. In January, a protester shoved Hammontree's camera lens into his eye and punched him. A photo on the artist's Web site shows an anti-war protester pointing a finger in his face, wrongly and angrily accusing Hammontree, who is openly anti-war and anti-Bush, of being a federal informant.
