Tiki lovers from all over the world make the annual pilgrimage to Fort Lauderdale's annual Hukilau. Held every October, the event is the creation of Christie White, a.k.a. Tiki Kiliki, whose passion for and knowledge of the retro Polynesian style is imprinted upon the four-day event. In addition to booking musical acts such as surf-guitar legend Billy Mure, the Italian tiki quartet I Belli di Waikiki and surf band The Intoxicators, Tiki Kiliki keeps her guests busy with parties, exhibits, seminars and guest speakers detailing everything from the history of exotica to tiki carving. This year's Hukilau, which was headquartered at the Yankee Clipper hotel, also toasted the Mai-Kai's 50th anniversary with a Saturday night blowout at the fabulous Federal Highway tiki palace and a photo exhibit chronicling its rich history. Kiliki also keeps the kitsch flame burning bright with her Tiki Torch Nights here and in Atlanta, where the original Hukilau was born in 2002.
