Fodor's Online Travel Guide reports that shopping is the preferred activity among travelers, which explains why Sawgrass Mills has become the second-most-popular tourist destination in Florida, behind Disney World. Sawgrass and its more than 350 retail outlets attract an estimated 26 million people annually or more than 70,000 per day, nearly half of them tourists who'd just as soon spend their time and money in suburban Sunrise than at any of our beaches. The westward migration to Sawgrass means not as much suntan lotion gets sold along A1A, but that's a small price to pay for having tens of thousands of visitors funneled into one spot and away from bumper-to-bumper traffic that already drives us nuts.
