Carl's Barber Shop
13180 W. State Road 84, Davie, 954/475-9277

In 1987, when Carl Iagrossi was just 22, he opened Carl's Barber Shop because he envisioned circa-1950s haircuts becoming more in vogue. Not only was Iagrossi right about the trend, but he has played a part in furthering it at a vintage shop known as the "home of the Davie flattop." Iagrossi started with three barbers, including himself, 19 years ago, but now employs 16 on weekends, when the chairs are filled to capacity. Weekdays are only slightly less busy during the summer, when kids from area high schools get trimmed by barbers who learned the trade in Italy or Spain. Carl's specializes in classic cuts, tapers and fades, but the shop's calling card is the 30-minute hot shave that includes a mini-facial and massage. The smell of after-shave fills your nostrils when you enter Carl's, and you leave not only with your hair trimmed from your neck and ears but also with the sense you've just been transported to a simpler time. Iagrossi will be expanding on the old-fashioned concept by opening a second location in Weston, where he promises a 1940s-style shop like those found in Chicago and New York.
