Bob's News and Bookstore
1515 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale, 954/524-4731
Earlier this year, the building next to Bob's News and Bookstore was leveled to make room for a soon-to-be-built medical center. With its south wall exposed to passing motorists for the first time, Bob's lives as a testament to the adage, "What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger." Now in its 30th year at the same location, Bob's is an asphalt-tough newsstand that can't be killed off by a developer, a declining neighborhood or even the Internet. While other newsstands have fallen by the wayside, this hovel for news-and-information junkies is as viable as ever with its floor-to-ceiling stock of cult publications, out-of-town newspapers, foreign glossies and porn magazines. "There's still nothing like being able to flip the pages," says Erin Steinberg, whose mom Sherry Steinberg and uncle Seth Cohen own Bob's and the building it occupies. Steinberg added that boat owners and cruise ship passengers help keep Bob's busy. "The Internet is great for being able to check on things," he says, "but when you're going to be on a boat for six days, you just want to flip the pages."
