As a kid, Pitbull had to memorize the works of legendary Cuban poet José Martí for his parents, but it is his bond with Lil Jon and their roots in crunk that has brought the native of Little Havana to the forefront of rap. Most of the nation first caught him freestyling on Jon’s double-platinum album,
Kings of Crunk. Not since Big Pun has the Hispanic community been so well-represented on the street. And unlike Pun, Pitbull doesn’t hesitate to incorporate the Spanish language into his work, whether he’s referring to the ladies “talking with their ass” in current radio hit “Culo” or taking on the dark side of Miami in “Hustler’s Withdrawal,” which appears on his TVT Records debut,
M.I.A.M.I. (
Money Is a Major Issue). Released just last month, the CD is already having an international impact and entered the
Billboard charts at No. 14.
