Plenty of other clubs have opened in the past year, most of them furthering the
sad trend toward exclusivity that leaves most people cowering in front of velvet
ropes all night. So Sonar, with a laidback vibe and an inclusive feel, arrived
in downtown Hollywood like a breath of fresh air. Although every night at Sonar
has its own theme, Wednesdays, featuring fantastic house music by DJ Baby Sean,
and Friday Vamp Nights, already one of the best fetish nights around, are particularly
notable. Touring acts from all over Europe and America land in the DJ booth on
Saturdays, with recent turntablists including AK1200 and British exports such
as Optical and Silver. And for a more chill mood, check out the film fest Mondays
or Tuesday Unwind, featuring spoken word, live music and a smattering of funk
and ambient electronica. Couple the incredibly varied themes with the ultramodern
décor and the one-room intimacy of the club, and you have yourself a brand-new
place to call home away from home.
