The band came onstage piece by piece: first the saxophonist, then the bassist,
then the drummer, each adding to the simmering musical paella. Suddenly, from
the darkened wings emerged an otherworldly figure carrying a votive candle and
attired in an ankle-length white robe, white cap and sandals. By the time Cuban-born
pianist and Santeria practitioner Omar Sosa set the candle atop his instrument
and arranged his lanky frame atop the piano bench, the audience at the Manuel
Artime Theater in Little Havana knew it was in for something special. But then
again, shows sponsored by the Rhythm Foundation usually are, as the 15-year-old
arts organization presents a veritable smorgasbord of world music in locations
around Miami-Dade County. In addition to the South Florida debut of Sosa and band
(featuring percussion great Mino Cinelu), the cultural nonprofit also brought
to the area this past season such notable acts as Cape Verdean singer Cesaria
Evora, Brazilian band No Em Pingo DAgua and bossa-nova legacy Bebel Gilberto.
Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra and Ojos de Brujos as well as Fernanda Porto
and Karsh Kale provided other cutting-edge world music. Returning to Brazilian
fare, the Foundation next month presents vocalist and political hero Caetano Veloso
at the Gusman Theater in Miami.
