Like Styx’s fabled Paradise Theater, the old Gulfstream Racetrack is just
a memory, reduced to an enormous heap of rubble earlier this summer. In its place
a new, grander grandstand will eventually rise, but the venerable racing grounds
still showed respect for history. ROCK history, that is. This past season, Gulfstream
once again opened its gates to a host of bands whose names and logos were probably
scrawled in blue Bic on your mom’s or dad’s high-school binders. Debbie
Harry pranced and posed in front of Blondie; Dennis DeYoung pranced and posed
in front of Styx; and War revisited the golden era of eight-track cassettes with
hits like “Low Rider” and “The Cisco Kid.” And for grandma
and grandpa? David Clayton-Thomas belting oldies backed by the roaring horn section
of Blood, Sweat and Tears, and Eric Burdon reliving the glory days of The Animals.
The future of Gulfstream’s concert series is uncertain at this time, but
neighboring Hollywood Greyhound Track, just north on Federal at Pembroke Road,
picks up the slack, presenting concerts by the likes of former Monkee Micky Dolenz,
Little Anthony and The Charlie Daniels Band through October.
