Heading into its 20th year, the Winter Music Conference is the pre-eminent event
for the dance-music industry and fans of the genre. For five days straight, the
world’s top DJs, producers and strobe-light technicians descend on Miami
Beach to attend workshops on marketing, copyrighting, distribution and what it’s
like to never go to bed before the sun comes up. Of course, all this talking during
the daylight hours only leaves conference attendees itching to dance, so clubs
throughout Miami take advantage of this influx of talent, enlisting A-list DJs
to show off their gifts and pack the floors. This year, the WMC hooked up with
the annual Ultra Music Festival, which officially opened the conference with a
14-hour concert featuring The Chemical Brothers, Paul Oakenfold, John Digweed,
Goldie, Miss Kittin and scores of other dance-music stars. Dates for next year’s
WMC are still pending but will be posted on the event’s Web site upon confirmation.
