Norton Museum of Art
1451 S. Olive Ave., West Palm Beach,
561/832-5196, www.norton.org

The Norton makes you feel as though you’re in a real museum for a change, not some place where a bunch of raincoats are piled on the floor near a neatly typed placard reading, “Raincoats on Floor, Placido Antonni, 1983” and all you can think is, “That’s a long time to leave raincoats on the floor.” No, visiting the Norton is like taking a school field trip to someplace that’s shiny and has a gift shop and guards walking around with their hands folded in front of them. And it’s full of, like, real art — stuff in frames that’s 100 years old but looks as if it would be wet to the touch and ceramics that scream Ying Yang dynasty and what appears to be a mummy or two. But it’s not stuffy: You can run around just as you did when you were in fifth grade and eat peanut butter and jelly in a well-groomed courtyard. So have your parent sign your permission slip and head to the Norton on the first Saturday of every month, when it’s free to Palm Beach County residents. If you live in Broward or Miami-Dade, just ask your parents for $10 for admission and maybe another $5, so later, you can get a slice at Pizza Girls on Clematis Street.
