Best Park Trees

Plantation Heritage Park
1100 S. Fig Tree Lane, Plantation,
954/791-1025, www.broward.org/parks

The Rare Fruit and Vegetable Council and park staff maintain an amazing section of rare and exotic fruit trees in this 90-acre park, which used to be a University of Florida experimental farm. They include litchis, jambolan, jackfruit, banana, Indian gooseberry, tamarind and mangoes. Just be sure not to pilfer any of the dark-pink akee fruit, which can kill you if they’re not opened naturally by the sun. (It could be argued that the signs near the akee trees that read, “This fruit can be hazardous to your health” are a bit understated.) The park also has attractive lakes with boat rentals and fishing, and offers picnic areas, playgrounds, a bike/jogging path and more.
