“I’m a dinosaur almost by default,” Aqua owner David Breslow
says of his driving range located near a gun range in Hallandale Beach. “It’s
one of the last freestanding driving ranges that is self-run,” he adds.
“Blockbuster closed. Frosty’s closed. Bogie’s closed.” Aqua
is the driving range used by Cameron Diaz and Matt Dillon in the 1998 comedy
There’s Something About Mary. Breslow helped both actors with their on-screen strokes, and his technique apparently left an impression on Diaz. “She was dating Matt before they started filming,” Breslow says, “and by
time they left, she had broken up with him. You put it all together. She saw
my swing, and the rest is history.” Open from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily,
Aqua has about 30 covered tee stalls that face a 25-acre lake long enough to
swallow a Tiger Woods drive. Clubs are available, and a bucket of about 50 balls
costs $4.75. Aqua also has a green and two sand traps for practicing chip shots
and putting.
