Progress has come more quickly in Europe than the United States on the decriminalization
of pot, universal health care and gay civil unions. That continent can also
claim to be more advanced when it comes to mechanized water sports such as the
Ski Rixen. Invented in Germany, the supersize pulley system designed for water-skiers,
wakeboarders and even kiteboarders is used in 78 water parks in Europe and just
one in the United States. Happily, local practitioners, including members of
Team Ski Rixen who compete internationally, can find the cutting edge in Deerfield
Beach. The five-sided contraption frames one of the lakes at Quiet Waters Park,
where high-wire hookups are available six days a week. (Ski Rixen is closed
Mondays.) And as the Europeans know so well, skiers can get the same thrill
theyd get on a boat, only theres no boat to clean after a day performing
tricks. However, unlike Europe, skiers must be covered by a private health plan.
