David Espinoza
Few people in South Florida pedal a bike faster than this 17-year-old from Wellington. In July, Espinoza won a gold medal and two silvers at the 2006 USA Junior Track Nationals in Trexlertown, Pa. According to his coach, Carlos Laborde, Espinoza is on pace to compete in world championship races, including the Olympics, in the next few years. He trains three times a week at the Brian Piccolo Velodrome in Cooper City, where his father introduced him to competitive cycling five years ago. His parents have supported their son's passion for cycling by outfitting with him $3,000 carbon-fiber bikes with $1,000 wheels. Payoff may be on the way, however, if or when David sets up residence at the U.S. Olympic training site in Colorado Springs, Colo.
