Started in late 2004 by local musicians Dominic Sirianni and Mark Pollack, New Art School has established itself as the premier local promotions group. Its reputation is built on the rampant success of its Rock vs. Art events, in which rock bands perform while artists paint offstage, and the sheer diversity of the bands it books, ranging from punk and metal to hip-hop. Keeping the ticket prices at $10 -- even for concerts by national acts such as Chicago's Smoking Popes and Austin, Texas' Awesome Cool Dudes -- and hosting the all-day Rock vs. Art have certainly added to NAS' street cred. It's amazing what a promotions and booking company can do when it values music over money.
