Anchor Inn
Lantana, FL 33462-3927 561-966-9955 Early bird special: Most people come to the Anchor Inn for the moderately priced fresh fish, but you can count on good non-seafood items as well. No matter what you choose, a loaf of warm honey-wheat bread partnered with whipped butter and sweet cinnamon butter gets dinner rolling. A bowl of slightly sweet baked beans also makes an appearance, quickly followed by tossed green salad served family style. It's a generous portion with plenty of iceberg, shredded carrots and purple cabbage, tomatoes and red onions. The house dressing, a good herb-flecked creamy Italian, is automatically served on the side. For seafood, we tried the fish fry ($13), a pile of beer-battered, perfectly cooked fish (a combination of grouper, snapper and tilapia on this visit), with a good crunchy coating from time spent in the deep fryer. It's served with thick-cut, house-made, skin-on steak fries. We also sampled the rib and shrimp dinner that's a half rack of really meaty tender baby backs topped with three medium shrimp brushed with a not-too-sweet barbecue sauce. For sides, try crisp coleslaw with minimal mayonnaise and a mashed combo -- a pretty orange swirl of sweet potatoes and mashed white potatoes. The densely textured Key lime pie has lots of pucker power, and the smooth creamy strawberry daiquiri pie also comes with a thin graham cracker crust. Either house-made pie will cap off your meal nicely. Meal includes: Bread, house salad, baked beans, entree, potato, vegetable, beverage and dessert. Price range: $13-$15 (Cocktails are half-price with early dinners)
Service/atmosphere: If you like outdoor dining, enjoy the patio bar. Otherwise, sit inside where captain's chairs, nautical shades of blue and assorted paintings and accessories provide the themed background along with a view of Lake Osbourne. There's also eager-to-please, prompt service and a full bar.
