First impression: I'm not sure why this moderately priced Italian eatery isn't busier. Chef Gary Pressman delivers big servings of stick-to-your-ribs Italian-American fare and more sophisticated seafood and grilled meats. It's perfect for families with children, especially if the parents like great wine and better food than many family spots.
Background: Open since late last year, Milan's comes to us from Harold Katz, who also owns The Addison in Boca Raton. Katz is not only the former owner of the Philadelphia 76ers, but also the founder of NutriSystem. Inc.
Ambience: The dark wood interior and classic furnishings belie the moderately priced menu and friendly tone of service. I'm told that since my visit to Milan's, prices have come down another 20 percent.
Starters: Milan's Signature Meatball ($8.95) lives up to its "must try" menu billing with its nicely seasoned mixture of beef, pork and veal served with very good marinara. Fried Fettuccine ($8.95) is a kind of pasta pie that comes plated with both marinara and alfredo. Quatro Formaggi Flatbread ($10.95) could have been crisper. It's topped with fontina, asiago, gruyere and mozzarella, basil and oven dried tomatoes. Caesar salad is very good with crisp greens and lots of shaved Parmesan. Order it as starter with a dinner entree and it's $4.50, but $8.95 for a half order or $12.95 for full.
Entree excellence: Seared scallops with Spinach Aglio ($19.95) are outstanding, with four huge scallops perfectly caramelized and served on a bed of spinach. Filet Milan ($29.95) is marinated before being grilled to perfect temperature. It comes with simply grilled vegetables. Delicious Chicken Pepperoni ($16.95) combines tender sauteed chicken breast, Italian sausage, pepperoni, tomatoes, garlic and white wine. It's then topped with marinara and mozzarella.
Sweet!: Along with excellent cappuccino ($4), try the shareable Vesuvius ($5.95), a layered dessert with a brownie bottom, cheesecake center and chocolate mousse top.
Service: Friendly and efficient.
Liquid assets: An enomatic wine serving system allows you to taste some very good wine in 2, 4 or 6-ounce portions.
Dining deal: All sunset menus are less than $18 and served 5-6 p.m. Sunday-Friday. On Monday and Tuesday, the Italian seafood dishes cost $19.95.
