One of the nicest ways to enjoy an evening out is taking a trip on an ocean liner, going nowhere in particular while having all the amenities of an overnight voyage. In five hours aboard the Palm Beach Princess, you can dance in the disco, watch a fairly good entertainment revue, try your luck at the slot machines and eat a decent dinner. All that and being back around midnight made for a most memorable evening.

Ships such as the Palm Beach Princess are part of the advantages of living (or visiting) an area where warm weather is year-round and riding the high seas rarely involves protecting ourselves against cold winds. The trip begins with reggae on the upper deck, where drinks or snacks are sold, patio furniture provides seating space and a small wooden dance floor fits about 20 people. Musicians are a deck above, looking down on spectators while playing songs such as Don't Worry, Be Happy.

Dinner is served in shifts, and guests receive a seating assignment when entering the boat. Changes can be made if the time doesn't seem acceptable. Between-dinner snacks are reasonable ($3.50 for a hot dog) as are beverages ($1.50 for soda, $3.50 for domestic beer, $4.75 for a mixed drink, $6 for a frozen drink).

Once the ship sails the required miles out to sea before gambling can convene, the casino opens featuring 400 modern slots, craps, blackjack, roulette, poker and bingo. Boarding fee includes a buffet, musical revue, entrance to the casino, dancing in the lounges, live bands and often a comedian. If you go for the entertainment, and either avoid the gambling or designate a certain amount of money you are willing to lose, then a trip aboard the Palm Beach Princess is a win-win situation. Of course, if you are lucky, you just might win back the cost of the trip. Either way, there are few better ways to spend five hours.
