Venetian Pool
Coral Gables, FL 33134 305-460-5357 The Venetian Pool is a unique Coral Gables treasure and still enchants visitors, even in a time where residential swimming pools are commom. Formed from a coral rock quarry in 1923, Venetian Pool is included in the National Register of Historic Places. The site was originally a quarry from which city founder and developer George Merrick extracted limestone to construct the early roads and the surrounding Mediterranean-Revival-style homes. Left with an eyesore, Merrick called on his uncle, Denman Fink, a noted artist, and architect Phineas Paist to create a swimming pool appropriate for the Mediterranean theme of the newly minted city. On Dec. 13, 1924, the former rock pit made its debut as the 820,000-gallon Venetian Casino and Pool, fed with cool spring water daily and featuring two waterfalls, coral caves and grottos. It was a breathtaking success, as opulent as a Hollywood set with the artfully painted and layered stucco buildings outfitted with aged red brick, patterned tile fountains and fishpond, lush landscaping and a sandy beach. And, of course, the vast irregular pool itself, surrounded by carved coral formations. Today the pool is a favorite place to swim and is also rented out for parties, weddings and receptions.
