Miami Metrozoo is cageless, allowing animals to roam freely in settings similar to their natural habitats, and is the only zoo in the United States in a subtropical climate. Although badly damaged during Hurricane Andrew in 1992, the zoo has restored its facilities and diversity of animals, with a collection of 1500 mammals, fish, reptiles, birds, invertebrates and amphibians of almost 300 species. Special exhibits include the elusive okapi (the only relative to the giraffe), giant eland, tree kangaroo, koala, Komodo dragon, clouded leopard, Andean condor, white Bengal tiger, silverback lowland gorilla and meerkat.

The 300-acre park is a botanical garden with misters, fans, shaded rest stops and water play areas for visitors to keep cool while enjoying the animals. Metrozoo offers guided tram tours, fascinating behind-the-scenes tours, a free elevated air-conditioned monorail tour, state-of-the-art playgrounds and water play areas for children, dining areas scattered throughout the Park, and souvenir/gift shops.

The American Bankers Family Aviary, Wings of Asia offers 300 rare and endangered Asian birds in free-flight, an indoor, interactive Field Research Camp linking today's birds to dinosaurs, fossil excavation pit, waterfalls, underwater viewing, and visitor center.

Birthday parties are available.
