Schoolhouse Children's Museum
Boynton Beach, FL 33435 561-742-6780 The Schoolhouse Children's Museum allows visitors the opportunity to experience what life was like in Palm Beach County in the early 1800s. Housed in Boynton Beach's first elementary schoolhouse, a 1913 building listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the museum takes families on a journey through exhibitions in six classrooms that were used for first through 12th grade until 1927. Guests are greeted by an animatronic figure of lighthouse keeper Hannibal Pierce inside a 15-foot replica of the Jupiter Lighthouse. The lifelike robot tells tales of days gone by while also previewing what kids will see during their visit. A 10-minute video presentation of the history of Boynton Beach follows. Most of the exhibit areas include props, such as play money, food, animals, dolls, and of course, costumes for dress-up in order to get a real feel for the times. Parents can dress up, too. The museum encourages you to share the experience and play with your child in the various exhibit areas.
If you get an early start, consider packing a picnic lunch and enjoying the Kids Kingdom Playground next to the museum after your visit. The all-wooden structure includes a giant castle, a boat, climbing apparatus and swings. (January 26, 2005)
