It certainly has been a savings-filled year.
At the beginning of the year, I asked one of our talented database editors to build an online tool that would help me track and tally all the freebies and money-saving offers I write about on my Shop-O-Matic blog (SunSentinel.com/Shop) on Facebook (Facebook.com/DoreensDeals) and in the daily Money section of the newspaper.
After tabulating offers for a year, the Save-O-Meter shows more than $15,500 in savings.
That's some serious coin.
Here's the year in savings, by the numbers:
Doreen's Deals: 575 and counting (the year's not over yet!)
Median savings: $10
Retail & restaurant coupons and products & services: $8,000.
Things to do: $4,500.
Free food, beverages and miscellaneous offers: $3,000.
This tally doesn't even count Red Plum, SmartSource and P&G BrandSaver coupons inserted into the weekend editions, which help subscribers save thousands more each year.
Readers often about ask how I find deals and what makes the cut.
I'm signed up for emails and text alerts from thousands of brands and restaurants. I have a freebie email account with more than 50,0000 emails. That's a great way to keep offers and freebies you sign up for from choking your personal inbox.
Each day, I review hundreds of emails and make sweeps on Twitter, Facebook and deal sites to find the best offers for you.
I feature an offer if it's easy to obtain, free or valued at $5 or more.
Some of my favorites: $10 off gas cards at Publix (today's the last day to get that offer. The coupon's in this week's circular), free admission to museums, parks and attractions, free meals and appetizers (there's one coming up Thursday at Outback).
If I've done my job well this year, you've used Doreen's Deals to save a good amount of money and, more importantly, become a more savvy shopper.
Happy New Year. Here's to a prosperous and savings-filled 2014.
