Best kids events this weekend: Junior Carnival, music and food fests

Several festivals celebrate different cultures in South Florida this weekend, including the Miami Broward Junior Carnival on Saturday, which has a parade for families to experience Caribbean culture with music, pageantry, food and a kids zone. Advance tickets are $10, plus the park charges a $1.50 entry fee. The event is noon to 10 p.m. at Central Broward Regional Park, 3700 NW 11th Place in Lauderhill. (

The Zun Zún Children’s Fest from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday introduces families to music from Latin America and the Caribbean at the Miami Dade County Auditorium, 2901 W. Flagler St. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for kids under 14. Get them at or call 800-745-3000.

Other fun events for families in South Florida this weekend include the following:

Tradewinds Park Food Truck Invasion, Thursday. Bring folding chairs and a picnic blanket to enjoy dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. at 3600 W. Sample Road, Coconut Creek.

Nightstalkers, Thursday. Ages 9 and up are invited to Green Cay Nature Center, 12800 Hagen Ranch Road in Boynton Beach, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. to join a naturalist on an easy night-time boardwalk tour looking at nature from the point of view of its nocturnal residents. $5. Dive-in Movie at Grapeland Water Park, Friday. Come over from 5:30 to 10 p.m. and slide until 7:30 p.m., then watch “Beauty and the Beast” poolside starting at 8 p.m. $5. Grapeland Water Park is at 1550 NW 37th Ave., Miami.

Funtastic Friday and “Ghostbusters 2” at ArtsPark Movie Night. Enjoy a bounce house, face painters and more starting at 5 p.m., with the movie starting at 8 p.m. Bring a blanket or beach chairs for lawn seating. Free. ArtsPark at Young Circle, 1 N. Young Circle, Hollywood.

When The Earth Shakes Explorium Exhibit Sneak Peek, Friday. Find out how science makes the world safer when the Earth shakes at the sneak peek of the Children’s Science Explorium’s new interactive earthquake exhibit from 7 to 9 pm. There will be free demonstrations, crafts and more at the Explorium at Sugar Sand Park, 300 S. Military Trail, Boca Raton.

“Beauty and the Beast,” Friday. Bring seating to watch a free movie at 7:30 p.m. at the Wellington Amphitheater, 12100 Forest Hill Blvd.


Oktoberfest, Friday to Sunday. Visit the front lawn of Pompano’s new Cultural Center to enjoy performances by the International Polka Band, Tuchar beers, delicious German food by local restaurant Checkers Old Munchen, games including stein races, barrel races and coaster toss, and the crowning of Herr & Frau Oktoberfest 2017. $15, kids 12 and under free. Family Matters Parenting Conference, Saturday. Moms and dads can learn how to navigate parenting from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale while their kids in grades 1-5 enjoy KidsGames, a sports and games program that shares positive life values. $10 per person. Unity 4 Community Saturday Morning at Galuppi’s. Galuppi’s and Pompano Beach Firefighters Benevolent will host a fundraiser Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a free breakfast buffet, music, bounce house, face painter, dunk tank, antique fire truck, and silent auction and raffle prizes such as golf packages, Panthers tickets, hotel stays, and restaurant and salon gift cards. Hands-On-History, Saturday. Join a museum educator for a story and art activity from 2 to 3 p.m. at HistoryMiami Museum, 101 W. Flagler St., Miami. This month’s theme is the Everglades — paint your own snake. $10, $5 for ages 6-12.

Golf Cart Rodeo and Drive-in Movie Night, Saturday. Enjoy the rodeo from 4 to 7 p.m., then the movie from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at Cutler Ridge Park, 10100 SW 200th St., Cutler Bay.

Opening Day of The Gardens GreenMarket, Sunday. Spend your Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. shopping for seasonal fruits, vegetables, cheeses, homemade old-fashioned breads and pies, fragrant herbs, sauces, honey, artisan custom crafts as well as grass-fed and pasture-raised meats. 10500 Military Trail, Palm Beach Gardens.

Downtown Hollywood Dream Car Classic, Sunday. Find vintage cars, collectible vehicles and vendors at this family-friendly event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the 1900 block of Hollywood Boulevard.

Paws in the Pool, Sunday. Small dogs (up to 30 pounds) swim 10 a.m.-1 p.m., and larger dogs swim 1:30-4:30 p.m. at the Venetian Pool, 2701 DeSoto Blvd., Coral Gables. $5.50 per dog, $3.50 per human.
