Boat parades, zoo events highlight weekend for South Florida families

Some of South Florida’s most famous holiday events set sail this weekend, with the Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday and the Pompano Beach Boat Parade on Sunday.

The Winterfest Parade (WinterfestParade.com) travels east along the New River and then north on the Intracoastal Waterway starting at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, ending at Lake Santa Barbara in Pompano Beach. On Sunday, boats leave Lake Santa Barbara and head north along the Intracoastal Waterway to Hillsboro Boulevard, starting at 6:30 p.m. (pompanobeachfl.gov)

Off the water, there are plenty of fun holiday celebrations for families, several zoo events and Baby Basel in Miami. The following is our list of highlights for the weekend:

Disney’s “Newsies The Musical,” through Dec. 17. This musical comedy about the 1899 paperboy strike pits street-savvy paperboys, aka “newsies,” against publishing baron Joseph Pulitzer. Yuletide on Atlantic, Thursday. Celebrate the holidays in Pompano Beach with a 6:30 p.m. parade along Atlantic Boulevard from Riverside Drive west to the McNab Park at 2250 E. Atlantic Blvd. An after-party at McNab Park includes games, bounce houses, free food and Santa. pompanobeachfl.gov

Movies on the Mile, Thursday. Grounds open at 6 p.m. at McBride Plaza, 150 Miracle Mile in Coral Gables.The movie “Home Alone” begins at 7 p.m. coralgables.com

Pembroke Pines Holiday Open House, Thursday. Holiday trees, miniature snow village with operating trains, Santa and elves, hot cocoa and cookies, holiday music and entertainment from 6 to 9 p.m. at Charles F. Dodge City Center, 601 City Center Way, Pembroke Pines. Free. ppines.com

Yuletide On Atlantic, Thursday. The Parade will feature floats, holiday performers and dancers and other entertainment. The parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. starting from Riverside Drive, heading west on Atlantic Boulevard and ending at McNab Park. pompanobeachfl.gov

Holiday Lighting Ceremony, Thursday. Music and activities, along with the lighting the Menorah, Kinara and the Wilton Manors Christmas Tree from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Jaycee Park, Wilton Drive and 21st Court, Wilton Manors. wiltonmanors.com

Rudolph's Winter Wonderland, Friday. Bounce houses, arts and crafts, $1 pony rides, and pictures with Santa Claus from 6 to 8 p.m. at Tamarac Park, 7501 N. University Drive, Tamarac. Free. tamarac.org

Bethlehem Revisited, Friday through Tuesday. This living interactive re-creation of the town of Bethlehem as it may have appeared 2,000 years ago features an authentic marketplace, livestock, shepherds, Roman soldiers, storytellers, and a living nativity at First Church Coral Springs, 8650 W. Winter Holiday Celebration, Friday.
