The move to bring an art-house movie theater to downtown Hollywood begins in a public way on Thursday with the Cinema Paradiso Hollywood Kick-off Party at 5:30 p.m. at Face restaurant (2022 Hollywood Blvd.).
The event is part of the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival’s $100,000 capital campaign to open a sister theater for its Cinema Paradiso in downtown Fort Lauderdale sometime this summer. For a $20 contribution, you’ll get a starter cocktail and complimentary hors d’oeuvres, plus the ability to tell people you were involved with the creation of Cinema Paradiso Hollywood from the beginning.
After drinks and movie talk, at 7 p.m. the gathering will stroll down the street to the new space, a former pottery store at 2008 Hollywood Blvd., that will be renovated into a 110-seat theater with a full bar.
“The residents of Hollywood represent our prime demographic: articulate and aware, knowledgeable about cinema, literature, art and current events, and they enjoy going out,” FLIFF president and CEO Greg Von Hausch said in a press statement.
Cinema Paradiso in Fort Lauderdale is well regarded for its blend of independent and foreign films, first-run commercial releases and themed events on its patio. Each fall, Von Hausch’s three-week film festival includes hundreds of screenings, with visits from filmmakers and stars, at several theaters in Broward County.
FLIFF chairman Alan Koslow called the new Cinema Paradiso “the missing ingredient” in Hollywood Boulevard’s mix of restaurants, stores and cultural offerings. “Downtown Hollywood is on the precipice of greatness,” he said.
