The goal for the brown-bag-and-blanket gathering in downtown Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday is as simple as it sounds.

“We’re just going to head over there for lunch,” says Rebecca Bradley of Cadence Landscape Architects, which is inviting all-comers to its International Picnic Day picnic at Peter Feldman Park in downtown Fort Lauderdale. “We thought it would raise awareness for people to get outside … and utilize public space to eat lunch. It’s as simple as that.”

The effects of such communal activities are more far-reaching for Flagler Village, where a new business and residential community is quickly being constructed.  Cadence, which set up shop on Andrews Avenue in 2010, has been a consistent proponent of the kind of civic engagement that gives the neighborhood character, from FAT Village Art Walk events to hosting popular  Wednesday visits from the Frankie Dogs food truck.

Bradley says that at a time when many relationships get their start on social media, there’s nothing like the connection made over a hot dog or a picnic blanket.

“It’s really simple, but it’s what makes a real community. It’s a nice existence,” she says.

The significance of the location for  Wednesday’s community picnic is not lost on Bradley. While her firm moved to Flagler Village after Peter Feldman died, she’s well aware of  the developer's trailblazing vision, which laid the groundwork for businesses such as Cadence to find a home there.

“From what I’ve heard, I think he would be pretty excited,” she says. “It’s nice after so many years … to see it have the life that a lot of people thought it could have.  [Peter Feldman Park] will start to have even more life as more densities come into the neighborhood. It’s in a perfect location.”
